Summer Activities for Early Elementary Children

In Line with the Common Core

Submitted with Mary Kay Hafer, School Psychologist

Adapted from www.classroomfreebies.com

We have finally reached the end of the school year!  Everyone has learned so much in our elementary grades here at CPCS, and has come so far since the beginning of the school year.  We are proud of all our hard working students and what they have accomplished.  To help our elementary students stay fresh and retain the skills they have worked so hard on during the school year, we offer some ideas for you to consider implementing with your children this summer (these ideas are aimed more to First and Second Graders):

·         When you are at the store, see if your child can count back the change.

·         When cooking, have your child help you decide which measuring tools to use and let him or her measure out the ingredients

·         Review basic math facts, especially addition facts to 18 and subtraction facts from 18.  Practice in the car, while making short trips into town.

·         Review parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives).  Try to find these kinds of words in newspapers or magazines.  Make a collage by cutting out and gluing words or pictures of nouns, verbs and adjectives to a poster board.  See how many you can get before school starts!

·         Visit the Public Library with your child. There are many wonderful summer reading opportunities at the library.  It’s a great antidote to the “What’s there to do, I’m bored” routine and best of all most library services are free!!

·         HAVE YOUR CHILD READ EVERYDAY BOTH SILENTLY AND OUT LOUD.  Both of these skills are very important for your child’s reading success, and it builds vocabulary development.

We have had a wonderful school year.  We appreciate the support of our parents and community members.  Have a great summer, everyone!
